The History of Coloplast

Our story dates back to the early 1950s. Nurse Elise Sørensen wanted to support her sister Thora, who, after ostomy surgery, was afraid to leave the house because her ostomy supplies were leaking. Out of a need for care and empathy, the idea for an adhesive ostomy pouch was borna solution designed to provide a sense of security and the freedom to return to normal activities.

Inspired by this idea, engineer Aage Louis-Hansen and his wife Johanne, also a nurse, created the world’s first ostomy pouch. This solution helped not only Thora but also thousands of others in similar situations.

It was this idea that marked the beginning of Coloplast’s history.
